Description Fourier analysis is a subject that was born in physics but grew up in mathematics. Now it is part of the standard repertoire for mathematicians, physicists and engineers.
In most books, this diversity of interest is often ignored, but here Dr Koerner has provided a shop-window for some of the ideas, techniques and elegant results of Fourier analysis, and for their applications.
These range from number theory, numerical analysis, control theory and statistics, to earth science, astronomy, and electrical engineering.
Each application is placed in perspective by a short essay. The prerequisites are few the reader with knowledge of second or third year undergraduate mathematics should have no difficulty following the text , and the style is lively and entertaining.
In short, this stimulating account will be welcomed by all who like to read about more than the bare bones of a subject. For them this will be a meaty guide to Fourier analysis. Table of contents Preface; 1. Fourier series; 2. Some differential equations; 3. Orthogonal series; 4.
Fourier transforms; 5. Further developments; 6. Other directions; Appendices; Index. Review quote 'This is an extraordinary and very attractive book I would like to see the book on the desk of every pure mathematician with an interest in classical analysis, and of every teacher of applied mathematics whose work involves analysis This is how mathematics ideally should be presented, but too seldom is.
More than anything, this is just fun to read, to browse, to study. Fourier Analysis is literate, lively and a true classic. I highly recommend it. I would like to see the book on the desk of every pure mathematician with an interest in analysis, and of every teacher of applied mathematics whose work involves analysis. Salinger, London Math Society "A stimulating survey of the ideas, techniques, and elegant results to be obtained from Fourier analysis Anyone who wants to find out what Fourier analysis can do would enjoy looking into it.
Zwaan, Acta Applicandae Mathematicae "This is a wonderful book. Fourier Analysis is literate, lively, and a true classic. Rating details. Book ratings by Goodreads. Exercises in Fourier Analysis. For physicists, engineers and mathematicians, Fourier analysis constitutes a tool of great usefulness. They are arranged chapter by chapter to correspond with Fourier Analysis, and for all who enjoyed that book, this companion volume will be an essential purchase. Weyls equidistribution theorem. The Weierstrass polynomial approximation theorem.
The Basic Library List Committee recommends this book for acquisition by undergraduate mathematics libraries. This is a wonderful book. It consists of a series of chapters — short interlinked essays, really — accessible to advanced undergraduates. As a text, it excels in the breadth of its treatment but freely sacrifices generality for clarity and readability. The level of rigor varies considerably. In a sense, everything else builds on that. There are short chapters — each about five pages long.

For physicists, engineers and mathematicians, Fourier analysis constitutes a tool of great usefulness. A wide variety of the techniques and applications of the subject were discussed in Dr Koerner's highly popular book, Fourier Analysis. Now Dr Koerner has compiled a collection of exercises on Fourier analysis that will thoroughly test the understanding of the reader.
