Not only does Eve Langlais have an obsession with calling average-weight women "overweight" and "chubby", but she seems to constantly make the character "heavy" for no reason. It doesn't further the story. It just gives the character something to be insecure and contrary about.
I have enough body issues of my own - why the FUCK would I want to escape to a fantasy world where I get to read about somebody else bitching about how that hot guy can't possibly be attracted to her because she isn't a size 2? That is in no way appealing to me. Just say she's curvy and let the reader imagine just HOW curvy she may be. I'm really sick of this "chubby" shit, when the characters are average and their weight doesn't matter at all.
I agree, girls with curves rock and all. But dear god, write something else. Edit: I made the horrible mistake of giving this a second shot. It gets so much worse. The guy calls the girl chubby It was so rude, I literally yelped out loud and reread it to make sure I wasn't hallucinating. And this girl is sooo freaking bitter about her body, it's And depressing.
It's mentioned every other paragraph and both characters are warped in their thinking about weight and body image in general.
I'm officially giving up on this author. View all 3 comments. Most books I have read by Eve have been on the witty and humors side. I was very happy to read this side of Eve.
But some of you may have a problem Most books I have read by Eve have been on the witty and humors side. But some of you may have a problem with the constant whining Teddy has about her weight. He longed to chase after him and inflict damage, but that would mean leaving his fated mate alone to start more mischief. View all 9 comments. Neither Teddy nor Reece wanted a mate but fate has different plans.
Reece gets his first look at the curvy bear, and unthinking, speaks his dismay out loud. When Teddy storms out of the bar insulted, Reece follows. Because she sure smells good. This short paranormal romance was recommended to me because I was looking for a "fated-mate" story in which the mates weren't instantly attracted. It's probably as close as I'm going to get, since of course you have to have some kind of attraction to know someone's your fated mate, now that I come to think of it.
Shifters Teddy and Reece quickly recognize each other by smell, but both are initially aghast to see whom fate has paired them with. Reece, who loves tall thin women is appalled that his mate is short and chubby; Teddy, a bear shifter, had expected another bear, not a wolf. But her real issue is the look in Reece's eyes when he sees her: although she's worked hard to love her body and has found no lack of men who appreciate it, it's still very painful to find her fated mate is repulsed by her. This was a cute, entertaining read. I liked that Teddy fights her attraction, refusing to be involved with a man who doesn't appreciate her.
And I sympathized a lot with her sadness, although it irked me that her mate is her physical ideal, as well as the classic tall, broad-shouldered, thin man that almost all romance heroes are.
It's considered great for romance heroes to appreciate a plain or large woman, but less conventionally attractive men don't get any love. And I didn't buy how conceited, arrogant Reece changed into the perfect loving mate so fast, and would like to have seen more growth. Although labeled "erotic romance" this seemed fairly tame to me, other than the fact that it uses blunt language and both characters are sexually experienced and hop into the sack quickly.
So a good read for those who prefer their erotic stories on the vanilla side. View all 8 comments. I really like Eve Langlais. Nothing about her stuff is polarized good-bad, virgin-slut, hot-ugly and that isn't all that common in romances. I didn't realize it until I had read some of Langlais other stuff , but so many romances have very polar heroines in terms of their sexual experiences. These woman are either virgins, experienced from other long-term relationships that hurt them, generally , or repentant sluts.
Again and again Langlais presents us with women who are sexually aware and d I really like Eve Langlais. Again and again Langlais presents us with women who are sexually aware and don't need to justify it, in fact, their sexuality is mostly used as a character descriptor rather than a plot builder. An example of that using another element would be: Character descriptor: She grew up in a single parents household with her father v.
Plot Builder: She grew up in a single parents household with her abusive father. With the latter we can assume that this will probably have a big impact on the character that affects the plot in some way. The former is just sort of a detail about the character. I can't think of any author that does this as well as Langlais and it really captures the people I know in life.
Therefore, I'd argue it's a realistic portrayal of women in our society today. Yes she can be sexually active, yes she can enjoy it, no she might not be in a committed relationship, but none of this is a bad thing, it doesn't make her a slut, in fact it doesn't really matter at all Ok, so praise of Langlais aside, let's get to what I didn't like about this story.
Teddy is fat I'm not sure how large she was but we know she is short and curvy having grown up with Amazonian-like women in her bear pack. She has always been different in a negative way, has been bullied for it and has only come to terms with herself and found self-love in adulthood. Maybe it makes a difference that I'm not fat but I really walked away with a bad impression of Teddy and her fatness.
At first it seemed all good, Teddy seemed comfortable in her skin and ready to defend her hotness but that all started to fall apart and Teddy's fears were all based around this element of herself that she can't change.
