I just wanted to start a discussion about units of the monstrous arcanum and their usefulness in the Destrution allegiance. What are you favourites and why? Do you have some good lists with units of the monstrous arcanum? Then you might want to share them? Feel free to discuss everything about, in and around this wonderful collection of monstrous units. I was initially thinking of adding 3 more troggoths and more forge world models like magma dragon, basalisk, or merwyrm.
From just reading the warscrolls I am not too sure if the basalisk or merwyrm are worth taking considering my experiences with similar stated monsters. I think the thing about them is that they are actually quite reasonably costed from a points perspective.
A basilisk for example has the same advantage as a thundertusk, it's malignant gaze isn't a shooting weapon, has good rend across the board and a not terrible statline for only points. The question to ask yourself is if you have the spare Behemoth slots in your list, if you do then it's a fantastic piece. My big thing about it is that it's damage output is actually quite independent of it's wounds taken.
So if your opponent is going to put shots into it then they need to actually KILL it in order neutralise it. A good comparison for the basilisk is a mournfang pack, they cost the same points and have quite a few similarities.
When you look at it that way it really comes down to how much do you value malignant gaze, worst case scenario you have points worth of massive distraction, best case you dumpster on their low wounds support characters! As to the Merwyrm, at points it's the "reasonable" end of combat monsters. I'm not sure I wouldn't just spend the extra points to get a colossal squig, a second hag or even go up to the big monsters like a Dreadmaw or Magma Dragon.
If you're thinking thematically, Merywyrm would tie in nicely with a swamp-themed army of Fimir and Fellwaters. Unfortunately this isn't true. The gaze is a hero phase attack, and thus has reach shorter than it's melee that rather than the TT's 26" reach with its breath. You can't play a pair of Basilisks the same way as a single TT. The advantage I was referring to is not being forced to attack a target you are in melee with and not suffering the -1 to hit against characters.
The TT breath weapon IS a missile weapon, though it doesn't make a to hit roll. I don't believe you can fire it out of melee. You can post now and register later. Every item in our inventory has been inspected, very strictly graded, and bagged for its protection. Shrink Wrapped. Still in the original factory shrink wrap, with condition visible through shrink noted. For example, "SW NM " means shrink wrapped in near-mint condition. Near Mint. Like new with only the slightest wear, many times indistinguishable from a Mint item. Close to perfect, very collectible.
