This book is noteworthy on a number of levels, not the least of which was that it was the first to tell the story of the West from the point of view of Native People and receive widespread attention for it. All my textbooks growing up were whitewashed forgive the pun. This book blew me away. I was proud to be able to give a copy to an Apache friend of mine before he passed away. It meant a lot to him, he said it was the first time he saw the truth written down in a book.
In any situation, looking at a situation from a new point of view broadens the mind and deepens the understanding. This is one of the great books of history of all time. I am having trouble keeping my interest level up although I do very much like reading about history. Just got through chapter 1. I feel like it's a barrage of facts related to European atrocities without a compelling historiographical narrative.
It's about cruelty for sure, but so far the book is all over the map literally. Is the rest of the book more of the same? It's more like an introduction. The rest of the book contains historical POVS from both sides accounts from the white men, and the Native Americans mostly.
Also contains dialogue from time to time, and tells stories from beginning all through to the end. I'm wondering about the historical accuracy of this book. Has anyone read reviews by Native historians? The Legacy of how the Native Americans were treated persists to this day. My brother wants to read "something like Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee but about African Americans" - I think he means in terms of how engaging the book is, the level of detail and reading level, etc.

The difference is : Native American culture had not lived with Europeans long enough to have an example or understanding of a true servant follower of Jesus to give them a clear hope of eternal life and justice for evil doers. Although purely fiction, Uncle Tom had picked up enough of the white man's God to believe in and give him hope plus exceptional courage through his tragic life. Uncle Tom's Cabin is also a much, much easier and exciting read.
